Region 8 senior centers worry doors will close

- - Multiple senior centers in Region 8 are in danger of closing their doors. The Cherokee Village director said it would really hurt the community if these centers were to close. "Because all of our people are quiet upset in each on of these centers because that is there little community and it's hard for them to even think about going anywhere else," Director Diane Knauss said. She also said Governor Asa Hutchinson reached out this week saying he was not going to let the senior centers close under his watch.

A and P attempts to better promote the city of Hardy

Cities across the state of Arkansas have Advertising and Promotions Commissions to assist in promoting tourism. Hardy A and P has undergone some changes in recent years in an attempt to promote the city and draw in more tourism. In order to renew a business license with the city of Hardy, a note indicating that you are current with A and P payments, will be required to renew. The commission is made up of Desai, Maddox, Vicki Rice and Freda Gamblin. Hardy Advertising and Promotions Commission meets the second and fourth Monday of every month.

White River Medical Center complex puts helipad project on hold

- - The White River Medical Center Complex's plan to add a helipad to the complex has been put on hold. Thursday night at the Cherokee Village City Council meeting, Mayor Russell Stokes, Jr. The project was postponed until 2016. Region 8 News told you of the complex's plan to add a helipad at the facility to expedite emergency needs to the area. White River Medical has agreed to pay the other 10 percent, making it no-cost to taxpayers. According to bids in October, the project was estimated to cost around $122,000.

Iowan says innocent of throwing ex-lover into Arkansas river

An Iowa man accused of tying his ex-girlfriend to a cinder block and throwing her into the Spring River near Hardy earlier this year pleaded innocent Tuesday to attempted murder and kidnapping charges. Jerry Dean Clark, 45, of Glenwood, Iowa, entered his plea in Sharp County Circuit Court in Ash Flat.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services announced Tuesday that this year's recipients of the Arkansas Volunteer Community of the Year Award are: Benton, Bentonville, Cherokee Village, Clarkridge, Fayetteville, Greenbrier, Heber Springs, Little Rock, Maumelle, McNeil, Mountain Home and Van Buren. The award is sponsored by the governor's office, the Arkansas Municipal League and the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Community Service and Nonprofit Support.

Community raising funds for tornado sirens

CHEROKEE VILLAGE, AR - One community in Region 8 said their plan for this winter is to raise enough money to purchase tornado sirens for the upcoming spring weather. According to David Woods, director of the Cherokee Village Office of Emergency Services, the city currently does not have tornado sirens, so residents of the town do not receive a warning in advance of the storm.

A Cherokee Village man and his wife face multiple charges after investigators say he raped a young girl and his wife did nothing to stop it. Sharp County sheriff's deputies arrested Albert Scott Maxon, 40, on three counts of rape after he reportedly admitted to having sex multiple times with a 13-year-old girl.

Hunters interested in participating in the Cherokee Village, Russellville, Fairfield Bay, Horseshoe Bend, Heber Springs and Hot Springs Village hunts should visit their website to register online or contact J.D. A Cherokee Village man returned home last week to find his mother lying in a pool of blood, covered in bite marks. Now, his mother is dead and the woman hired to care for her is in jail.

CHEROKEE VILLAGE, AR - According to Sharp County Sheriff's Department Detective Aaron Presser, a 20-month-old child was taken to a Little Rock hospital Sunday after searchers found the child in Lake Sequoyah. Presser said Sharp County dispatch got a call around 9 a.m. from the Cherokee Village area about the child.

A caretaker who was arrested with blood around her mouth after the body of an elderly mother she was looking after was found covered in bite marks. Jennifer Lea Collins, 55, is said to have bitten her victim's chin off before the elderly woman's son discovered them both on the floor of his home in Mixtec Drive, Cherokee Village.
